Babble
Uniquely realised surreal still life digital art photography, printed on high quality Hahnemuhle art paper, available to buy in various sizes
‘Babble’ plays with the idea of the visual tease and mischief making. It playfully, yet seriously, ponders the question of the interpretation of a photograph.
The photographs are presented in a familiar style reminiscent of 17th century Dutch still life paintings. Here the objects on display are gathered from junk and charity shops and arranged and displayed to give an impression of familiarity. A lot of the objects, made or adapted, are deliberate nods to other genres of art, including influences from Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Rene Magritte and Surrealism, even Pop Art.
I find the humour and subversion of these genres exciting. I’m interested in the question: if something worthless is presented in a familiar style of art can it be called art? I want to entice the viewer to interpret the photograph without being presented with intended deeper meanings. The aesthetic is clear but what about interpretation?
P.S. It could be all ‘cock ‘n’ bull’. Look for a different version of each in most of the images.
